As you can see, the software landscape for Symbian S60 devices is hardly barren. Yes, there are not nearly the amount of third-party applications available as there are for the Palm OS or Windows Mobile, but most of that is because there is a lot of core functionality present in devices already.

You also have a different paradigm of use — non-touchscreen for the Symbian/S60 folks, and touchscreen for the Symbian/UIQ folks – that forks developers and reduces the number of titles available for both.

Java apps are more prevalent with Symbian, and well done in some cases (Google Maps and Mail Mobile, Opera Mini) whereas native development is stronger on Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices. Java apps have been around a long time, and Nokia’s implementation of Java is very well made. The performance of these apps does not drop off nearly as much as I’ve seen on Windows Mobile and Palm OS devices.

Flash Lite is interesting too. The front end of N-Gage, as well as some of the games, are made with this. The Nokia Web Browser also has been updated to view Flash-enabled websites via Flash Lite in some of the latest devices.

Flash Player for Mobile Devices Delivers High-Impact Video and Dynamic Web Content

ADOBE MAX 2007, CHICAGO - October 1, 2007 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) today announced the availability of Adobe® Flash® Lite™ 3 software, which now supports Adobe Flash Player compatible video and enables the delivery of dynamic Web content on mobile devices. Flash Lite 3 allows mobile device manufacturers, operators and content providers to differentiate their offerings by giving users the ability to watch Flash Player compatible video, the world’s most popular video format, and browse Flash enabled Web sites when integrated with a mobile Web browser. Both NTT DoCoMo and Nokia committed to deliver Flash Lite 3 enabled devices in upcoming releases of handsets. With over 300 Million Flash enabled mobile devices and handsets shipped so far, Adobe expects more than one billion Flash enabled devices to be available by 2010.

Flash Lite 3 more closely replicates the desktop experience delivered by Adobe Flash Player. This gives mobile users the freedom to access content whenever and wherever they want, while efficient resource management capabilities significantly improve and optimize performance for mobile devices. With Flash Lite 3, developers worldwide are able to create more engaging applications, interfaces and mobile assets that integrate video, as well as develop innovative and dynamic mobile assets such as wallpapers, screensavers or casual games.

Adobe Flash Lite is a lightweight version of Adobe Flash Player optimized for mobile phones and other non-phone, portable electronic devices like Chumby and iRiver. Flash Lite 1.1 supports Flash 4 ActionScript. Flash Lite 2.0, based on Flash Player 7, supports Flash 7’s more powerful ActionScript 2.0. Flash Lite 3 allows mobile device manufacturers, operators and content providers to differentiate their offerings by giving users the ability to watch Flash Player compatible video, the world’s most popular video format, and browse Flash enabled Web sites when integrated with a mobile Web browser. All versions also support the W3C Standard SVG Tiny (a mobile profile of W3C’s Scalable Vector Graphics recommendation). The advantage over SVG is the ability to add audio and interactive elements without the use of other technologies such as JavaScript.

Flash Lite is considered a client-side, or user interface (UI) layer, development technology. In this realm Flash Lite competes with other technologies like Qualcomm’s uiOne markup language and Sun’s JavaFX Script. Because of the more powerful ActionScript advances it is more able to integrate with and even compete with device-layer technologies like J2MEBREW. Flash Lite should not be considered a mobile operating system like Symbian OS, Windows Mobile, Mac OS X for mobile. and

As with Flash, Flash Lite benefits from the ability to read and redraw external XML content.

Future

During the Adobe 2007 Financial Analyst Meeting , several key developments and forecasts of Flash Lite were presented.

In December 2006, 220M Flash Lite devices had been shipped. This is predicted to approach 1.2B in 2010, mostly due to the acquisition of some key vector rendering technology by Actimagine which will reduce the Flash Lite player memory footprint.
